Best OBD tool + iOS for BMW E90

Aim: Want to purchase a BMW E90 OBD2 reader device that also lets me reset codes.

  1. bimmergeeks ProTool app: Failure

shit doesn’t work.

generic OBD2 scanners DO NOT WORK. P-codes are nearly useless for diagnosing cars. Honestly the only thing generic OBD2 code readers are good for is to check emission monitor readiness and to see if someone reset the check engine light. THATS IT!

  1. ELM327 Bluetooth: Failure

It won’t work. Has to be their adapter – the reason is the QC of most of the generic adapters is poor. Apparently like 70% of the packets were getting dropped, so they decided not to support them. it kind of sucks (I have 2 useless bluetooth adapters), but it also prevents people from bricking modules using a flaky adapter. Fortunately it’s about the same cost as all but the cheapest ones, but those probably don’t work anyway.

  1. BMW INPA or ISTA Software (Free) on a windows laptop and a €15 K+D Can cable.

Ista D and Inpa toghtether will do more than anything else.

Ista D is what BMW used in there dealerships for years.

Inpa is there Engineering development tool.

You can do any type of coding with Inpa well beyond the canned

routines you get with things like Carly.

Ista D is like having a shop manual with guided trouble shooting. It also has schematics and mechanical diagrams

its something like 50 gigs of space on a disk.

The catch is you have to know your way around a PC and it you have

Apple products you have to run these programs inside a Virtual

machine. It will also require effort to set up and learn to steer either

of these.

Bmw Inpa

Inpa suite of tools diags and coding.

the most powerful tool for coding there is.

Ista D diagnostics and guided troubleshooting all in English

this like having a shop manual on your laptop.

Parts and wiring diagrams exploded views etc etc.

This is a big program that was developed for dealerships and used

for the active life of the e90.

  1. Foxwell NT530 Scanner loaded with the BMW software (€177) (Software for other makes are available for download at $60 a pop) is the ONLY low-cost tool I’ve ever seen that support multiple OEMs. The expensive, professional-level scanners typically provide access to most, or all, manufacturers OEM-specific information, but those scanners also typically cost $2-5K.

The BMW-software for the NT530 is EXCELLENT, and provides access to not only the engine computer, but virtually ALL computers on the car – Engine, transmission, brakes, ABS, Traction Control, Air Bags, Audio, Navigation, Climate Control, Locks, Alarm, etc. etc.

It is an EXCELLENT scanner, and mine has already paid for itself many times over in the ~9 months I’ve owned it.

Nt530

  1. Autel MaxiCOM MK908Pro or Maxidas DS808 ($600 to $2500). This is a professional level diagnostics tool that mechanics and repair facilities will use. It does everything that BMW ISTA/INPA and Foxwell NT510/NT520 can do but the advantage is that it comes loaded with software for all Makes and Models (Asian, European, American).

If you have multiple cars in your family (like me), the “best value” is the Autel Maxidas DS808. At around $680 it covers every make and model.

Ds808

  1. For simple engine diagnosis, emissions readiness, OBD code reader/clearing, freeze frame data, realtime PIDs, logging, gauges, etc., I’d get OBD Fusion and a Bluetooth LE OBD2 interface.
  1. I use a combination of the following, based on the need, for my E39, E46, E84, E92:
    – ELM327 Bluetooth LE OBD2 interface with OBD Fusion, Dash Command apps
    – Carly gen2 WiFi OBD adapter and Carly app
    – BMW Scanner 1.4 adapter and software
  2. If you are looking for a simple OBD2 scanner then Foxwell NT624 PRO is the best option with free lifetime software updates. You can also explore more OBD2 devices here http://www.obdexpress.co.uk/wholesale/foxwell-nt624-automaster-pro-makes-all-systems-scanner.html and can choose one according to your requirements.

Definition of Generic and OEM-specific:

OBD access comes in two flavors: Generic and OEM-specific. ALL cars since the late ’90s MUST support “Generic” access. This supports a wide range of generic ENGINE-ONLY codes and VERY basic functions, like clearing faults and resetting the SES light. For many simple repairs, like a mis-fire, this is enough, for many, like turbo faults, it doesn’t even come close. These devices provide NO access to the MANY other controllers in the car, like transmission, air bags, atc.

Each manufacturer also provides their own, unique OEM-specific codes, which often provide MUCH more specific faults. The “cheap”, generic code readers CANNOT read or reset these. Each manufacturers interface is different, so a scanner than can access the Ford OEM-specific information cannot, in general, access any other manufacturers OEM-specific information.

Conclusion:

All of these options are better than a stupid generic OBD2 scanner in that these have the ability to connect to each individual module on the car and read manufacturer specific codes.

Use Inpa or ISTA for 2001 BMW E38 750IL turn off DRL

Car model: 2001 BMW E38 750IL

Mechanical issues: relatively straightforward to correct, such as a window regulator needing replaced, lock rod disconnected from the trunk latch, etc. the previous owner made issues worse. For example, the cluster was replaced at some point with one that has ~6k miles more than stated. Tamper dot is ON as a result Now I have to get the correct mileage from the LCM and re-sync the cluster to match.

BMW diagnostic tools to try:

ELM327 Bluetooth adapter: refused to connect to the car

Carly (for BMW): refused to connect to the car

Inpa and ISTA Rheingold: Yes

Inpa and Rheingold did all I needed so far, once used NCS expert, got an error trying to code, just needed to clear FSW man file in work folder, then coding was done. I believe PA Soft BMW scanner is actually remake of Tool32 with user friendly interface.

I believe there are already hundreds of guides on the net. Just google for coding with NCS, or for instance for Rheingold there is the original manufacturer user guide which is for Ista-D, since Rheingold is actually Ista-D, the user guide can be easily applied to Rheingold. In many cases you will have DIY instructions for a particular job (for example how to code LCM), but it would be very hard to make instructions for all the possible jobs one might imagine. And the instructions are for most common issues known. There are not many instructions for Tool32, probably most of them will be about how to register new battery, but that is the case you need Tool32, there are many things one CAN do with Tool32, but not many one WILL do in real life. After all, they are engineering level programs (Inpa, NCS, Winkfp), not for everyday use. or one tells you he wants his interior lights soft off, and so on. One guide I could write is how to understand what is car diagnostics and coding, and programming. And my first recommendation would be, don’t play with any program unless you really need to solve a particular issue. I know people having no issue with car, and then they read a few things about WinKfp, they buy K+Dcan cable, and try to “update” their ECU, from their PC user background they might think update is always good, but updating car ECU is not the same as updating our antivirus on PC, and they end up with bricked ECU) Sad, but true) The poor won’t know that for programming you need more serious cabling like GT1, beside that you need a stable voltage, and besides all ask yourself “Do I really need to do it?”

(Fixed)2012 BMW N63 engine error “malfunction powertrain”

Have one BMW ICOM with ISTA software to scan a 2012 BMW 7 series N63 engine, the car runs rough and I get the fault, “malfunction powertrain”. I thought it was my ignition coil so I replaced number #7.

misfire 7 cut out-02

Suggestion from one professional:

Did you have the CCP (Customer Care Package ) done and were the injectors replaced at that time? I think you should have an extended warranty on the injectors for 10 years/120K miles, so that is the problem, you should go back to the dealer and have it fixed under warranty.

Did you run the misfire test module? Before replacing anything, you can rule out the coil by swapping it to another cylinder and see if the misfire is still on #7.

Have the dealer check your VIN to see if the CCP has been done (there will also be a sticker on the driver’s door jamb if it was done). Take a look here for more info:
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2015/SB-10057338-7462.pdf

It’s just a guess about the injectors, as they are a common cause of drivetrain malfunction. There are multiple revisions of the injectors, so if they aren’t the latest, the dealer will swap them out.

Bank 1 passenger side front to rear, 1, 2, 3, 5
Bank 2 Drivers side front to rear, 5, 6, 7, 8.

You should have INPA software loaded on your PC, it works better when testing the cylinders & injectors with the engine running. You can run Analog, or Digital component test. You cannot damage anything with INPA, it is just diagnostic Test.

Here is one INPA software for free:

https://www.4shared.com/zip/VWi1bzg2ee/EasyBMWTools_Mikes_.html

Google “bmw k+dcan cable switch” to buy the cable, actually, as to the INPA software, you will get it on a CD when you buy that cable., and then you don’t need to take risk to download the free software with virus.

Fact:

My car has had the CCP ( customer service package) done in 2015. I had the dealership send me the report of service and they replaced all the injectors at that time along with many other parts except the timing chain. I’m hoping my problem is in a coil and/or spark plug. I’m going to run the INPA program and test those items.

Then I was told that:

Injectors have a 10 year 120,000 miles warranty.
It does not matter if they have been replaced in the past. If they are bad again, then the Dealer will replace them free of cost and keep replacing them until the warranty period is over.

UPDATE:

Replaced all my spark plugs which were original I’m expecting based on how they looked and I had no record they were ever changed. My fault was cleared by the ISTA program and the car runs well again. So no injector issue, even though my fault reading through ISTA said number 7 injector misfire, it was a spark plug. I tried using the INPA program, but I couldn’t get the program to run, it kept coming up with an error in German.

Thanks.

Tips of how to choose Car diagnostic tools and software

After years of research and money invested, I would like to share and describe my collection of hardware and software.

  1. Genuine licensed Delphi DS150e Cars and Trucks: pretty much the main tester I use because of simplicity and fast response. Only tool suited for Iveco Daily.2. KTS540 licensed with ESI2.0 (One-time-purchase licence): I use it only on cars Delphi can’t diagnose properly. Good on Euro5 onward cars, BMWs.3. Launch easydiag 2.0 activated PRO online: Always in my pocket for fast diagnosis, key programming on Ford, module configuration on Mercedes, diagnostic on latest Ford Mustang 5.0 and USA imports, suspension adaption on Range Rovers, Mercedes Sprinter. Not good for module reflash.

    4. Actia Multidiag XS 2G (2nd generation), currently with its base program (latest version v2018 43.51), it is a bit slower and the interface not that friendly like Delphi, but it is special because its passthru compatibility. I also use it via Passthru with:

  • Mercedes-Benz Xentry Passthru 2018.12 (tested and sees all modules on X-klass 2018, works with DAS as well on older cars. The only way to diagnose this car among all my testers)
  • Forscan
  • SDD JLR (v156 current version)
  • Toyota Techstream
  1. OPCOM 2018 (Revision D+): powerful and cheap tool, covers cars until 2018.6. VCDS 18.2: for all VAG cars: encountered a UDS communication problem on a Passat B8 2.0 Bi-TDI7. Multiecuscan 3.9R1 with ELM327, mostly for Ducato euro5, but it works flawless on any Fiat, Alfa, even Suzuki SX4 1.9JTD etc. It covers dealer functions.

    8. VAS5054a and VAG CAN PRO: reflashed modules on VAG. VAS5054a can be used with Xentry Passthru.

Every tool has its capability. For example, I can do full coding on PSA with Launch, I can do coding on Renault/Dacia with Actia, on Passat B8 Bi-TDI i could do function tests on AdBlue only with KTS. Delphi covers pretty much everything.

  1. BMW INPA

I would suggest to purchase cheap leads from obdexpress.co.uk instead of trying to use pass through. That way you can use any of the many guides available on the internet. Also I believe the seller is selling the leads with software slightly modified to allow very easy installation.

The thing to note – for E series, earlier cars need pins 7+8 joined, while late E series need pins 7+8 separated. I bought my leads long time ago so I have 2 separate leads, however now you can purchase lead with switch to change this. Also you can use INPA with some F series models, but for that need ENET lead and need to modify a setting in a file. Both leads are available very cheap.

  1. Nothing beat the factory equipment. All you ever need is:
1). Launch scanner for quick functions
    2). Alldata/prodemand
3). Factory software! Xentry, Ista, Odis, etc.

To be continued…

Enjoy.
