ISTA-D error “the vehicle could not be identified successfully” Solution

This article starts with the problem: I have some issues with ISTA-D Version 4.22. installed through the Bimmergeeks installation pack. I have also tried the one through Mikes Easy install before with the same result.
I keep getting the following error when trying to connect to vehicle: “The vehicle could not be identified successfully. Check vehicle interface and ‘PAD active’.”
The same error shows up when I try to use E-NET cable (which works without an issue for E-SYS coding), as well as K+D CAN cable (which works without an issue for INPA).

I have checked the settings in EDIABAS.ini and all looks good, as I said it works well with INPA.

Advice:

Do you unzip all files in required folders? I think yes. You need to feed the registry values to computer so it can understand your standalone installation (which in fact is not executable installation) and variables.

Question:

They are actually executable files, installing everything through an installer. There were no manual registry entries nor *.reg files to load into the registry, neither with Mikes or Bimmergeeks installations.

Advice:

I see. Then check with regedit what settings you have

under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BMWGroup\ISPI\Rheingold] or similar path.

Question:

Sure, see the attached picture of the reg entries I have in that path.

Advice:

Try onlinemode = true

Finally! Works!

Good to know:

There is no connection with servers. Its offline. These registries makes windows and ista having proper configuration for running application.

Creator C310+ BMW Scanner Review: Pros and Cons

Here obdii365.com gathers Creator C310+ BMW code scanner honest reviews based on users’ working experience.

1).
I bought a Creator C310+ last week
I have the 03 540i and it communicates just fine. ABS light comes on during comms and everything.
Found that on a couple of friends cars I’ve worked on as well, as well as my car when bought it with the trifecta lights.

2).
it works fine.. it does everything.
FYi… you can just do all of it with the engine running

3).
It works fine and provides the info decently. Only thing I would like to see is overlaid graphs so you can visually see the relations of O2 to FT etc.
It is “slow” but displays the info correctly. Took some exploring, trial and error, and reading on the forum to figure it out.

4).
Scrolling is slow, but it provides useful info and has been a big help to me. Found the graphing of the pre-cat o2 sensor to be quite helpful in determining I needed a new one on bank 1 but the bank 2 sensor was doing ok.

5).
$55 seems cheap- or damaged.

I agree scroll can be slow, but I’ve found it works great, all the info is there- you do need to search it all out. Mine will reset all it claims.

6).
I have this one and it works fine for me. I figured it out pretty easy and I am not nearly as adept as some of my fellows. I really only use it to clear codes and read codes. I did clear adaptions once and boy was that a trip.

7).
I’ve had mine for about a year..there’s no “book” that i’m aware of that walks you thru it.

8).
I have a Creator C310 scanner and one tip I learned early on was that you’ll need to have an adapter and have it plugged into the 20 pin under the hood to receive live data-at least I did on mine. You may already be aware of this, but I wasn’t until I started poking around here.
though it depends on which live data stream you wish to read…the 20 pin connector interfaces with the non dme modules, abs etc, and will give you live data from them. the engine data is read via the 16 pin underdash connector from the dme.

9).
I ordered an engine bay round connector – (OBD-16 to BMW-20 Socket) and ran the diagnose using the C310 Creator Scanner. It picked up the error (Driver Seat Belt Buckle) and cleared it without any issues.

The C310 worked well ..once I had the engine bay round connector (8 bucks).

I’ll now turn my attention to fixing the drivers seat belt buckle switch.

10).

I reset mine with the C310 when I took the door panel off and disconnected the airbag there.
The c310 has probably paid for it self 3 times now since I’ve had it….not all faults are created equal. Some faults are what is called “Hard faults” these faults are recorded in the computer brain. a component is missing or there is damage – hard fault – only dealer equipment can clear the airbag light or fault when everything thing is finally corrected.
then there is the “soft fault” this fault is due to… let’s say a hiccup in the modules monitoring of what ever system, all components are in place and there is no impact damage…something happened (to a small degree) but the system is quickly back to normal. Like when I disconnected and removed my seats from the car and I DID NOT disconnect the battery and let the car sit for maybe 15 min beforehand…I was plagued with the airbag light for two years…come to find out…I had broken a “Squib” from the airbag unit at the passenger door…didn’t know at the time there is a precise way of removing/disconnecting the airbag!
It was that experience that I come to see why its called the “Ultimate” driving machine….

11).
I Bought the Creator C310,…and it does clear the airbag light

12).
I have a C310 and have been very pleased with it. Never tried the Foxwell.

Gives me all the codes I need plus I could reset an airbag light when I foolishly disconnected it.

13).
The C310 does do some real-time graphing. A quirky tool, but damn cheap.

14).
I have the 310, Carly, and a laptop setup.

The 310 by far is the easiest to use, but doesn’t do all sorts of things. For 90% of the stuff we do it’s probably a best bet.

Carly seems to have more depth and better brief descriptions of codes. For our X3’s (E83 at least), the coding functions are VERY limited. I also ended up buying the Bluetooth module BEFORE I found out I couldn’t code the E83 with it. Pissed off! Had to buy the additional straight USB plug in adapter. Then my stupid phone didn’t accept data over the USB port, only charging. Had to then go out and but a refurb android tablet just for Carly.

The laptop setup is insanely complicated and fussy it seems. Diagnostics are relatively OK, once you get the finicky cables to work. I burned through about 3 before I found one. Then for certain models you need to get a switchable one, or manually short some pins. Then to do other stuff like flashing you CAN’T use the nice USB cable you just got working, you pretty much have to use an ICOM.

15).
I just got the Creator C310 today 5/22/20 and it worked 100%

16).

Better than paying diagnostic fees and then labor costs just to reset the light. I spilled a smoothie in my 2007 Mini Cooper and needed to take the seat out to clean the spill thoroughly. Of course, I read online afterwards that we are technically supposed to disconnect the battery first because there are sensors that will think that disconnecting the wiring harness under the seat for the seat belt and airbag sensor will cause a fault in the system (like the wiring shorted out or got a break in it accidentally and it needs attention). In any case, just received this code scanner yesterday and hooked it up to reset my warning light. Plugged it into the OBDII port and selected my vehicle in the configuration. Then I turned the car on so the scanner could communicate with the ECU. There are quite a few things to scroll through so it took me a while to find the restraint system option, but once I found it, it was as easy as 1-2-3 to erase the fault. Once done, I unplugged my scanner and started the vehicle up and voila…no more warning indicator on. This little gem has already paid itself off because I know the dealer would have charged probably double the cost of what this scanner costs. Although it might be difficult to find the right thing to diagnose from the menus, I still give it a 5 star rating because 1) it works and does what it is supposed to do and 2) just like anything else, time and more use with the device will make you become an expert at using it. Great tool for the home mechanic, but like another review said, if you are looking for actual BMW codes, this will not give that to you…I’m no BMW expert or BMW mechanic so I don’t need the true fault code. =)

17).

I purchased the Creator C310 Plus Code Scanner for BMW Mini, and it read all the codes specific to my car. It was easy to designate the Make/Model because it reads various BMW/Mini models, including my 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman S.

18).

I was seeking to reset SRS lights due to a passenger restraint system error on a 2013 bmw X3 F25. It cleared the code easily once I programed to the right vehicle and turned off that annoying fault alarm. With OBD , ABS, SRS functions it is a very usefull tool for simple diagnosis

19).

Worked perfectly on my 2007 Mini R56. Read and cleared the passenger seat SRS warning light fault code 93C3. After two weeks fault code has not reappeared. Was a loose connector under the passenger seat and caused the fault to be tripped. Need this scanner to clear the code. Local import shop wanted $150 just to clear the fault code. This scanner is well worth the money.
20.)

For the price it is a great option to scan BMWs and Minis. On older BMWs the autoscan feature does not work (my case E53) however on my mini F56s it worked like a charm.

No screen dimming option (as far as I know) if used during night time can be a bit bright.

If you have used scan tools before you shouldn’t have a problem, if it is the first time it might take a bit of tinkering to get the hang of it.

Great product, does what it says.

21).

Using the optional round connector cable I am able to read and reset most codes on my early 2001 BMW X5. And that’s what I bought it for so no real complaints at the price. I will say that the operation manual is not very good (probably written for a previous version of the software and not detailed enough) and the “Automatic Search” function doesn’t do anything on my car. But figuring it out is fairly straight forward, just remember 1) key off when connecting, 2) key on to read codes, and 3) key on but engine OFF to erase codes.

22).

This BMW C310 scanner not only showed me the trouble codes (4 of them), but i was also able to reset all the modules (one at a time) so i could get the cruise control working again and the remote working again. (now i do not have to use a key in the door). It reads and resets the main computer, the ABS module, the Air Bag module, and the body control computer and it’s sub-modules (such as the comfort access setup). It came with the july 2019 version software, so it did not need to be updated online before using it…. The written instructions were not as clear as i would have wanted, but i was able to figure out how to look at each module and then reset them. The menus are deeply nested, and you may have to go 3 or 4 layers deep to find what you are looking for . To go to a different test area of your car, you have to back out 1 step at a time to the beginning menu, and then go stepping down another path, etc. I thought the buttons were not sensitive enough, i really had to push firmly on each button to get a response / it did not recognize light touching. . . Overall, a really good value compared to taking it to the dealer.

23).

My 02 Mini Cooper was purchased with a check engine error message. Because of it the previous owner sold it cheap. I ordered this scanner the next day and as soon as it came, I found that the issue was a bad fuel filter. I spent $30 for the part and I did the work. I ended up saving myself at least $200 in labor. With the cost of the filter and this scanner. I was a winner. I’ve since used it for any random codes that may appear and to reset the maintenance intervals when I change the oil Totally worth every penny.

24).

Purchased for my ’06 Mini. Every person should have an OBD for their car. Works perfect and has saved me lots of money in allowing me to dx and fix my car issues myself.

25).

BMW X5, E71. First you have to get used to the menu system, it took me about 5-10 minutes to get hand of it. Worked like a charm afterwards. Diagnosed Park Sensore faults, tells me which side, wire faults, sensir faults and many more. You could even clear bunch of presets as well so be careful with this thing. I could not update it on desktop software it came with, unless it was already updated version. Easy to use, clear bright screen. Worth a buy.
26).
Excellent tool. Able to see all sorts of live data on my bmw 328i. I had a problem with my windshield washer pump not working. I could verify with this that the computer was seeing the command from the switch on the wiper stalk so it helped confirm it was not an electrical issue. I also had an airbag light On and found out it was the passenger seat occupancy sensor. Once I fixed that issue I was able to reset the airbag light with this tool. It finds lots of bmw specific faults which I find very helpful. Well worth the price IMO.
27).
Bought it to reset the dreaded and obnoxious airbag+seatbelt console warning light caused by a disconnect of the battery safety terminal. Read the code perfectly, and easy to clear with just a few button pushes.
28).
I used this on my 2002 Mini Cooper and it works very well. Read trouble codes and cleared trouble codes. However their were quite a few of “can’t communicate” errors. Not sure if it’s just the compatibility with the car or what but otherwise works very well
29).
Not much to say, used it on a 2008 X5 and it does everything it claims to do, easy to use, great interface. Buy it and save yourself a lot of money on scans.

30).

I have the same one. Good tool, shame it doesn’t read fuel trims though.

31).

It will not clear the abs codes on a e46 only reason we got it was to do this abs codes and nope wont clear them

32).

I’ve purchased many obd2 scanners, including the Actron CP9125, B800 SRS tool, VeePeak Mini, and the Creator C310. The creator is my favorite so far as it does everything in one, and is well under $100. Best of all it works with early OBDII models like the E36, E46, E38, E39, E53, E90, E92 and all of the modern models like the F30, F20, F22, G11, G30 and so on.

PROS:

very cheap

easy to use

compatible with older BMW (with a 16-pin to 20-pin round connector)

able to view live data in graph

CONS:

no user manual or manual in poorly worded and incomplete

no information on update (check C310 update guide)

won’t reset ABS codes on some BMW, i.e E46

Conclusion:
>the graphing software is very handy for looking at MAF/fuel trims/o2 sensor outputs/fuel pressure …especially for older X’s with failing/sclerotic systems

>fiftees series includes some coverage of the foxwell

>tough to beat the ista stuff

The Creator C310+ is a cheap, imperfect tool but it does much more than a cheap OBD-II scanner for most BMW. I would recommend it for a beginner.

How to use Piwis II Tester solve Cayenne 958 sound no work

Have Porsche Cayenne 958 2011 with acoustic locking sound doesn’t work. Can turn this sound on or off using the vehicle settings in the PCM or with PIWIS. Reading this article.

Car model: Porsche Cayenne 958 2011, have it for about 2 weeks.

Symptom: The acoustic locking sound doesn’t work when I lock the car with the remote. It blinks twice as per the manual but doesn’t make the sound.

Solutions:

Option 1: Failed

IIRC – you can turn this sound on or off using the vehicle settings in the PCM. You may want to open the manual.

Update:

Ok, just tested, the panic works just fine. It’s kinda like a high pitch, almost like whistling sound.

Update:

Heading to the garage with my key. I found an online 2014-2015 – and there is no mention (as you found) of an audible alarm arming confirmation. All they mentioned is the double-blink of the parking lights. Let’s see what mine (’11 CTT) does. Hang on a second…

OK – back. Mine does a double-chirp on key

locking and door-button locking. No noise on unlocking. I poked around a bit on vehicle settings, I could swear I saw someplace in the convoluted menu system an option to turn the chirp off – but couldn’t find it. Go figure.

Almost feel like I entered a Nintendo cheat code and it turned it off. When I first got the car, I was bushing buttons and turned the key in the door.

Update:

On my 2011, pressing the lock button on remote twice locks the car but disables interior monitoring. I don’t think I have this button. But regardless, the manual indicates acoustic sound, which doesn’t happen.

Option 2: I’d love to get a more sophisticated tool like PIWIS, Piwis 2 is enough and much cheap.

Piwis 2 can enable/disable the locking sound for Cayenne 958 successfully.

Can the locking sound be enabled, YES?

Can the locking sound be disabled, YES!

Tools needed: PIWIS2, pair of balls.

I located the acoustic locking sound in Frontend Electronics. Just ticked the customer-specific coding on this to enabled, saved, and tested to work. It all took 30 seconds.
Must admit, I was surprised with this chirping sound and how quiet it is, but it works for what I needed it for.

To anyone who wants this remote locking sound, you definitely need PIWIS 2.

I only wish I had more info on PIWIS 2 coding instructions, I would try coding more things.
While trying to change some other random things, like telling the rear lid to close on lock, it completely stopped working and wouldn’t close. Good thing there is Auto Coding function in PIWIS 2. then turned the car off, on and functions returned to the rear lid. Hence I say “tools needed, pair of balls”

FYI,  for the newest Porsche model after the 2017 year (i.e 2018 Macan), requires piwis III;

For the older Porsche model (i.e a 99 Boxster), don’t need the newest version, then piwis II is okay.

Enjoy!

non-idrive e92 CIC Retrofit Coding in 2020 User Manual

Trying to code in the CIC i just retrofitted into my non-idrive e92. I tried the Standard Tools with SP Daten v60 without successfully. Icom a and icom b and winkfp to do the flash update. (this will change the vin too). To do the FSC coding FStool
Problem:
trying to code in the CIC i just retrofitted into my non-idrive e92.
Got a CIC unit from 2011 E91 which is installed and working.
I’m having real trouble with coding the damn thing-
what I done is changed the build date from #0607 to #0909 and also added the option $6VA and then proceeded with FA write to both CAS and NFRM.
but even though the option list shows the changes there is no CIC ecu under the ecu list which means I can’t code the cic itself.
Tool and software to use:
the Standard Tools with SP Daten v60
Suggestion:
It sounds like you did everything right with changing the date you don’t need ICOM in any way unless you need to flash the firmware on the CIC which is a whole other can of worms, but it will need to be on the C1A firmware to use any of the tools to load all the FSC codes with any of the patchers or run an emulator. v60 datens should be fine also.
But anyway back to your issue, try also adding $609 to your VO, I added both $609 and $6VA when I did mine and set the build data to #0909
S609A NAVIGATION SYSTEM, PROFESSIONAL
Question: It’s all sorted now. That’s exactly what I figured out and added $609 and the cic option came up.
Now onto trying to get the nav to work with the scripts. The cic shows c16a firmware does that need to be updated or will I be able to leave it as it is ?
Answer:
c16 is the one from last, c1a is that latest.
Personally I’d not recommend the script option, while it works, updating the maps is a bit of a job.
I’d look at virgin the cic and loading your own fcs and then it’s like factory, and updates are no problem.
Question: What would that require in terms of hardware and software?
At the minute the Nav is greyed out… I assume that’s because the VIN doesn’t match am I correct ?
Answer:
My first understanding is that all the script activations need the latest firmware which means you need it updated to C1A which is beyond my capabilities and will take some special hardware, like Icom. Once you are on C1A firmware it is relatively straight forward to run one of the patcher utilities to install all the FSC codes – there are a bunch of FSC’s to activate everything, 5 or 6 of them and it isn’t like just a map update FSC, more involved. Your other option is to get an emulator and plug it in to just spoof it and activate everything.
As for the glovebox USB, I have seen them with the cable on amazon and ebay, non OEM ones that apparently work fine.
flash cic with Winkfp or ISTA-P
Question:
Im about to flash cic with ista P, cic was retrofitted couple off questions
1) should i first change the vin with Fstool or will ista p take care of that?
2) how sould i set up my Icom connection i know i need to connect to obd and Most connector, but in the
Easyconnect
Type—>Remote
Ip—>……..
Mode—>> ???? Not sure which mode
Answer:
ISTA-P will complain about the retrofitted CIC !!!
If you then flash it with Winkfp.
And CIC must be operated with Can Filter.
Or you create your own FSC to Vin from the vehicle.
easyconnect
ADDS:
Icom a and icom b and winkfp to do the flash update. (this will change the vin too)
To do the FSC coding FStool
Procedure:
0 – Move Car Key to position 1
1 – Connect BMW ICOM A2 to any available MOST (fiber optic) Connector. Connect the USB cable between it and the ICOM module.
2 – Connect OBD connector to ICOM Module.
3 – Connect ICOM to Laptop via Ethernet cable.
4 – Start up Itool Radar and Reserve the ICOM slot. (You’ll need to search for ITool Radar).
5 – I usually use the EasyConnect after ITOOL to select the MOST bus ASYNC setting and LOCK Icom.
6 – Start up WINKFP and select comfort mode
7 – Select Update ZUSB
8 – From the list, select CI62F1 first and click OK.
9 – Enter VIN
10 – Click DONE.
11 – In Next window, Click PROG-ZUSB.
12 – Blue bar will start – This step will take about 35-40 minutes. CIC screen will turn black and cic fan will be blowing at full speed.
13 -Select Update ZUSB again
14 – From the list, select CI63F1 and click OK.
15- Enter VIN
16 – Click DONE.
17 – In Next window, Click PROG-ZUSB.
18 – This step takes about 7-10 minutes.
19 – Lastly Select Update ZUSB again
20 – From the list, select CIA0F1 and click OK.
21 – Enter VIN
22 – Click DONE.
23 – In Next window, Click PROG-ZUSB.
24 – Screen might come up with BMW symbol and bootloader mode.
25 – This step takes about 45 minutes.
Once these steps are complete, CIC will boot up again and you’re done!

BMW ICOM VS ISTA + via Enet / D-CAN

Topic: What is the benefit of using ICOM? why not ISTA + via Enet / D-CAN? where is the best place to have working BMW ICOM?

1st Question:

What is the benefit of using an ICOM? Is it just for ISTA-P or does it add functions to ISDA-D also…Ive been using ISTA + via Enet for Fxxx series and D-CAN for E series which it seems I have the ability to reset adaptations, Valvetronic relearns, E brake retraction ect so seems ISTA + IS fully functional without an expensive ICOM…

Answer:

Main benefits of an ICOM from my perspective:
1. Wireless diagnosis connection
2. Ease of use in A shop with multiple active connections
3. Self-hosted DHCP server for ethernet programming

2nd Question:

I’ve been using ESYS for coding but the token master part is problematic and I have to keep changing the date on the laptop.
So the part of my interest in ICOM is to have something reliable that doesn’t need hacks to make it work. I don’t mind spending a bit of money for the convenience and reliability. I’m hoping that I can one interface and software package that covers diagnostics, coding and the repair manual if possible.

Answer:

Get the free Launcher Pro with the token until the year 2250
It should work with the ENET

But I prefer to use ICOM with the ISTA+

Question:

I’m looking to buy a BMW ICOM and various places sell them. I know they’re not genuine BMW.
Anyway, has anyone had an experience of using OBD Express, or could you recommend a reliable supplier?

My car is a 2010 F10 525d 204hp

Answer:

Option 1. Someone bought ICOM Next from the dealerships costs 500USD, nearly 2 times expensive than the above.

Option 2. Just bought an ICOM NEXT clone wish I knew this. But I think since I save about 200 and only using it once or twice its still not too bad.

185eur

or with software

245eur

Benefit Of Using ICOM 02

Option 3.

Get the VX series, works with ISTA-P as it is ICOM as well
cost about 187EUR (with software)
downside is it does not have MOST programming function, but it has WiFi.

Benefit Of Using ICOM 03

How to solve laptop wont connect to VCM2 V86?

Question: I’ve got a VCM 2 that’s using the v86 program that’s about 4 years old.
Took me a while to get it working but has worked ever since on a couple of Van’s and 2 of my fiestas now the laptop won’t connect to the VCM even though it makes the bong bong sound when I plug something into the USB port.
The lights on the VCM are a little random.
The laptop light will light when it’s only plugged into the van and the standby light is the only one that lights when the laptop is plugged in.
Tried a different USB laptop to VCMII and it’s still the same.
If I get a new one will it just plug into laptop and work or will I need to set it up?
Also what at the Forscan things people use, would one of them be better for resetting the learned values on an mk7 euro5?

Solution:

  1. Try resetting the vcm by pushing the tab beneath the end cap, the springy part above the USB slot in the pic, and then updating the drivers again.

  1. If you have Forscan downloaded on your laptop you can try using the vcm as the interface for Forscan if your vcm is bricked and I hope it’s not it works better than the elm as it will automatically switch between high/low can.

ford vcm2 is also j2534 pass-thru interface,vcm1 is not, and VCM module is for measurements using ford ids, and this forscan software runs j2534 protocol devices as per j2534 vcm2.

FORScan can only work with VCM using the J2534 Passthru interface. VCM 1 doesn’t support J2534 Passthru so can be used with IDS only. VCM 2 and VCMM (next model after VCM2) work fine with FORScan.

  1. Answer to the question” If I get a new one VCMII will it just plug into laptop and work or will I need to set it up?”

– After you plug the new VCMII to the computer, open the device manager, if you can’t see the update button, please directly use the IDS. If you can see the update button, just click on it to update before using IDS.

Here obdexpress.co.uk chief engineer recommends you one best VCMII clone:
